History Of The Tennis Bracelet

Do you know where the tennis bracelet got it’s name? According to Diamond Bug, The 1987 U.S. Open Women’s Tennis Match was halted when world champion tennis player and winner of 18 Grand Slam victories, Chris Evert broke her elegant thin inline diamond bracelet on the court. Hence a new name and trend was ignited for this distinct piece of jewelry.

In 2002, tennis great, Serena Williams wore a 12 carat diamond tennis bracelet custom designed by Harry Winston, jeweler to the rich and famous. At $29,000, Winston placed an extra secure safety clasp on the bracelet to ensure it stays in place. With 242 diamonds set in platinum, this bracelet has a lot of bling for the buck.

According to archeologists, bracelets were not part of the western world until the Bronze Age. They were considered a status of wealth as bronze was the metal most evidenced then. It can be said with somewhat certainty that bracelets did not make a big showing until the 17th century when gold medallions, stones and cameos were linked together to create a beautiful bracelet (armlet).

Today, the entire world uses bracelets in some form or fashion. Most recently, bike racing phenom, in 2004 Lance Armstrong, started a trend of wearing silicone, rubber wristbands (his organization calls it the LIVEstrong wristband) to spotlight cancer support. Today, different organizations and people wear different colored wristbands for their specific cause. __________________________________________________________________________ This site is dedicated to all the tennis greats and the profession that inspired a jewelry classic.
